A commitment is a commitment… until it isn’t. In the modern recruiting world, decommitments and flips are almost expected, especially when elite prospects are involved. But for Texas Longhorns wide receiver commit Easton Royal, the noise hasn’t matched the reality.
Royal, one of the most coveted players in the 2027 recruiting class, has been surrounded by flip rumors ever since he pledged to Texas, with Ohio State frequently mentioned as a potential destination. Those rumors picked up steam again recently, but Royal’s latest visit to Austin only strengthened his stance. Following the trip, he told Orange Bloods’ Jason Suchomel that his relationship with Texas is “even stronger now after this past visit,” signaling that the Longhorns remain firmly in control.
Easton Royal solidifies his commitment to the Texas Longhorns
Ranked as the No. 3 wide receiver and No. 12 overall prospect in the 2027 class, Royal is the centerpiece of Texas’ early recruiting efforts. His commitment over Ohio State and in-state LSU was a major win for Steve Sarkisian and his staff, immediately giving the Longhorns a foundational building block despite having a small class so far.
Texas currently sits around 19th nationally in the 2027 rankings, but that number is misleading with only three commitments on the board. Alongside Royal are tight end JT Geraci and cornerback Karnell James, both three-star prospects who committed shortly after Royal. The expectation is that the class will climb quickly as more pledges come in.
Other programs remain involved, and Royal is expected to continue taking visits, including a trip to Florida. Still, Texas has maintained strong momentum thanks to consistent communication and a clear vision for Royal’s future in Austin.
That future lines up well with the Longhorns’ recent recruiting success. Texas’ 2026 class ranks second nationally and is highlighted by five-star quarterback Dia Bell and five-star athlete Jermaine Bishop. Texas hasn’t finished outside the top five in recruiting since 2022, including a No. 1 class in 2025, reinforcing the program’s staying power on the national stage.
For now, Royal’s message is simple. Despite the rumors and outside pressure, his commitment to Texas isn’t wavering. If anything, it’s only getting stronger.
