One of college basketball’s top true freshman point guards from 2025/2026 just committed to Texas.
The Texas Longhorns have made a major move in the transfer portal, landing former Colorado Buffaloes guard Isaiah Johnson one of the most sought-after point guards available this offseason.
Johnson, a standout freshman during the 2025–26 season, quickly built a reputation as one of the top offensive guards in the Big 12 Conference. He averaged 16.9 points per game while shooting an efficient 48.6% from the field and 37.8% from beyond the arc, earning All-Big 12 Honorable Mention honors. His ability to score at all three levels, combined with solid playmaking, made him the No. 3-ranked point guard in the portal.
His recruitment drew heavy interest from powerhouse programs, including the Kentucky Wildcats, who made a strong late push. However, Johnson ultimately chose Texas, giving head coach Sean Miller a cornerstone piece heading into next season.
The commitment comes at a critical time for Texas. The Longhorns are undergoing significant roster turnover, with key backcourt contributors like Tramon Mark, Jordan Pope, Simeon Wilcher, and Chendall Weaver all departing. That left a clear need for a high-level floor general—something Johnson is expected to fill immediately.
Beyond the numbers, Johnson brings a dynamic element Texas has lacked in recent seasons: a guard capable of taking over games offensively. His arrival should help stabilize the offense and redefine the team’s identity in the backcourt.
There are still roster questions to address. With Dailyn Swain also moving on after declaring for the 2026 NFL Draft, Texas is expected to remain active in the portal. Rather than targeting another high-profile guard, the staff may lean on incoming freshman Austin Goosby at shooting guard and shift focus toward adding an elite small forward to balance the lineup.
Overall, this is a statement addition for Texas. Landing a top-tier point guard like Johnson not only fills an immediate need but also signals that the Longhorns are aggressively retooling with the goal of competing at the top of the Big 12 next season.
