The New York Mets are coming off a stunning season in which they failed to reach the playoffs after once being viewed as baseball’s top team. At one point, everything appeared to be falling into place, making their eventual downfall all the more shocking — even to some of the game’s most prominent voices.
“The New York Mets, on a six-game losing streak, are trailing 6–0 while facing Jacob deGrom. After starting 45–24 and holding the best record in MLB, they are now 31–47, better than only the Rockies, Twins, and Nationals,” ESPN’s Jeff Passan wrote. “This isn’t a collapse. It’s a disintegration.”
After another quiet offseason, it initially appeared that 2026 might bring more of the same for the Mets. That outlook changed when the club made several important moves, highlighted by the acquisition of ace Freddy Peralta.
“The Mets’ months-long search for a frontline starter concluded late Wednesday when they landed All-Star Freddy Peralta, along with right-hander Tobias Myers, from the Brewers in exchange for top prospects Brandon Sproat and Jett Williams,” ESPN’s Jorge Castillo reported.
With Peralta entering the final year of his contract and Milwaukee unwilling to meet his price, FanSided’s Chris Landers believes New York will act quickly to secure him with a five-year, $140 million extension.
“The Mets didn’t give up multiple years of control over Brandon Sproat and elite infield prospect Jett Williams just to watch Peralta walk in free agency,” Landers wrote. “They would much prefer to lock him up now rather than compete with a crowded market later. Peralta turns 30 in June, has topped 100 innings only four times in eight seasons, and has yet to receive a major payday — making him the ideal candidate to sign an extension now instead of waiting.”
The Mets appear intent on ensuring Peralta never reaches free agency, especially after he led the National League in wins just one season ago.
New York has shifted from projecting as a middle-of-the-pack team to emerging as a serious contender in the NL East. Securing an extension for Peralta is now a top priority, and if the Mets can finalize a deal, it could prove to be a transformative move for the franchise.
