The New York Mets have made a low-risk move to add more experience to their pitching depth, bringing back veteran right-hander Chris Devenski during their series against the Atlanta Braves. The move has attracted attention because Devenski is an 11-year MLB veteran, a former All-Star and a World Series champion who has already spent time in the Mets organization.
Devenski’s career gives the Mets something valuable at this stage of the season: experience. The right-hander reached the majors with the Houston Astros and earned an All-Star selection in 2016. He was also part of Houston’s 2017 World Series championship club. Over more than a decade in professional baseball, he has pitched in a variety of roles, giving him familiarity with both middle-relief and higher-pressure situations.
His connection with the Mets is also not new. New York previously signed Devenski to a minor-league contract in October 2024, and he eventually reached the major-league roster during the 2025 season. He made 10 appearances for the Mets after having a strong start at Triple-A Syracuse, where he posted a 1.93 ERA through his first nine games.
That previous experience with the organization could make the reunion particularly interesting. Devenski already knows the Mets’ environment, coaching staff and some of the players, meaning the transition should be relatively straightforward. Rather than bringing in a completely unfamiliar pitcher, New York is adding someone who has already shown that he can work within the organization.
The timing is notable as well. The Mets are currently in Atlanta for a three-game series against the Braves. New York opened the series with an 8-5 victory on Monday before Atlanta responded with a 4-0 win Tuesday.
While Devenski’s addition does not represent a major headline-making acquisition, it reflects the kind of move teams frequently make as they navigate the demanding second half of an MLB season. Pitching depth becomes increasingly important as workloads accumulate, injuries emerge and teams try to keep their bullpen fresh.
For the Mets, the biggest potential benefit is having another experienced arm available if the organization needs help. A veteran pitcher can provide innings, give younger pitchers another experienced teammate to learn from and potentially earn a larger role if his performance warrants it.
Devenski has also experienced the ups and downs that come with a long major-league career. After becoming an important piece for Houston early in his career, he moved through several organizations, including the Arizona Diamondbacks, Philadelphia Phillies, Los Angeles Angels, Tampa Bay Rays and Seattle Mariners before eventually joining the Mets. He later signed with Pittsburgh during the 2026 season.
That journey makes his return to New York an intriguing storyline. He is no longer the same pitcher who established himself as an All-Star in Houston, but his experience remains significant. The Mets do not need to expect him to recreate his 2016 form. Instead, they can look for consistency, strikes and dependable innings.
The move also gives Devenski another opportunity to continue his lengthy MLB career. At this point, his value is not simply tied to his past accomplishments. The Mets can evaluate what he has left and determine whether he can contribute to their current pitching situation.
There is an important distinction between adding a veteran and immediately placing him into a major role. Devenski’s addition should not automatically be viewed as a guarantee that he will become a key part of the Mets’ bullpen. Instead, it gives the organization another option and allows the team to evaluate him before making any larger decisions.
For a club dealing with the challenges of a long season, those options can matter. Bullpens can change quickly, and a pitcher who begins the season outside the major-league picture can suddenly become important when circumstances change.
Ultimately, the Mets’ decision to add Devenski is about depth, experience and opportunity. He brings an All-Star appearance, a World Series championship and 11 years of professional experience to an organization that already knows what he can offer.
