After seeing its wide receiver room thinned out by transfer portal departures, Texas has moved quickly to restore experience and depth. The Longhorns have signed Wake Forest wide receiver Sterling Berkhalter, according to 247Sports, giving the offense a proven veteran presence ahead of the upcoming season.
Berkhalter’s addition comes at an important time for Texas. The Longhorns lost five wide receivers to the portal, including dependable contributors DeAndre Moore Jr., who transferred to Colorado, and Parker Livingstone, who signed with Oklahoma. Talented young players Jaime Ffrench, Aaron Butler, and Santana Wilson also departed, leaving a noticeable experience gap at one of the offense’s most critical positions.
At 6-foot-3, 203 pounds, Berkhalter brings size, maturity, and reliability. He chose Texas over several notable programs, including Washington, LSU, Virginia Tech, and Wisconsin, before ultimately committing to the Longhorns. His decision gives Texas a battle-tested option to complement returning receivers Ryan Wingo and Emmett Mosley V, as well as newly added Auburn transfer Cam Coleman.
Berkhalter’s college career spans five seasons and multiple stops, including Wake Forest, Cincinnati, and North Carolina A&T. Across 43 career games with 23 starts, he has recorded 76 receptions for 1,083 yards and five touchdowns. Thanks to a medical redshirt, Berkhalter will have one year of eligibility remaining, making him an immediate-impact option for the Longhorns.
Last season with Wake Forest, Berkhalter emerged as a steady contributor, finishing third on the team in both receptions and receiving yards. He hauled in 30 passes for 416 yards and two touchdowns, averaging an efficient 13.9 yards per catch, a mark that highlights his ability to move the chains and create explosive plays.
While Texas continues to evaluate other roster needs, including along the offensive line, the signing of Berkhalter signals a clear effort to stabilize the wide receiver room. Rather than relying solely on youth, the Longhorns have added a seasoned target who understands multiple systems and has logged meaningful snaps at the college level.
With Berkhalter now in the fold, Texas has taken a key step toward rebuilding depth and experience at wide receiver, positioning the offense to remain balanced and reliable as it prepares for the season ahead.
