Vierling, who came over from the Philadelphia Phillies in the 2023 trade that sent Gregory Soto to Philly, has proven to be a solid contributor in the Tigers’ outfield. The 29-year-old is under club control through 2027, which gives the Tigers some stability in the outfield moving forward.
While Vierling’s return is a positive move, the Tigers still have work to do in the outfield. Riley Greene, who earned an All-Star nod in 2023, has proven to be a key building block for the future, but the rest of the outfield has been a mix of inconsistent performances. The Tigers likely still need to add another outfielder, potentially a more established bat, to round out the unit and provide more offensive punch. It’s possible Detroit could look for a veteran who can bring power or experience to complement Greene and Vierling.
Beyond the outfield, the Tigers will also need to address their offense as a whole. While Spencer Torkelson showed growth in his second season, and Greene emerged as a promising star, the team’s offense struggled overall. There’s a real need for more consistency and power in the lineup, and the Tigers could target a veteran infielder or a slugger who can add some middle-of-the-order protection for Torkelson, Greene, and even Javi Báez, who is hoping for a bounce-back season after underperforming in 2023. Whether through free agency or trade, the Tigers will likely look for a reliable bat to add to the core.
In the infield, while Báez remains a central figure, there are still questions about who will man second base and whether the Tigers will need to explore options at third base as well. The team might look to bring in another infielder who can provide steady defense and a solid bat, especially if they’re not fully confident in the internal options.
On the pitching side, the Tigers have a decent foundation with Skubal, Eduardo Rodríguez, and a few other solid arms. However, there are still question marks around the back of the rotation, and the bullpen could use some reinforcement as well. With Michael Lorenzen hitting free agency, the Tigers may look to add another starting pitcher, possibly a veteran, to solidify the rotation. They’ll also be hoping for continued development from young arms like Alex Faedo and Joey Wentz. The bullpen has some talent, but they could use another proven late-inning reliever to strengthen their back end.
Given their relatively manageable payroll, the Tigers will have some flexibility to make moves, though it’s unclear how active they will be in the free-agent market. General manager Scott Harris, who made his mark with a few key trades in 2023, may look to bolster the team via trade as well. Detroit has a solid farm system, which could make them players in trade talks, either moving prospects for major league talent or acquiring high-upside young players who could contribute in the near future.
The Tigers have several decisions ahead, and their success in the 2024 season may hinge on how they handle their offseason roster changes. Whether it’s bolstering the outfield, improving the offense, or adding depth to the pitching staff, the Tigers’ front office will be busy trying to shape the team into a more competitive unit for next year. The Vierling signing is a small but solid step, and much more will need to be done to get the Tigers back into contention.
