Alexis Díaz’s Difficult Season Continues, Braves Claim Him After Dodgers DFA
Alexis Díaz has endured a rough 2025 season. After early struggles that led to a demotion to Triple-A, the former Cincinnati Reds closer was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers in May. However, Díaz was unable to rediscover his All-Star form in Los Angeles and was designated for assignment last week. On Sunday, the Atlanta Braves offered him another chance, claiming him off waivers from the Dodgers.
The 28-year-old got off to a slow start this spring with the Reds, hampered by an injury that delayed his season. He began the year on a rehab stint with Triple-A Louisville and made his first major league appearance on April 15 against the Seattle Mariners, walking two batters in the outing.
Díaz appeared in only six games for the Reds in 2025 before being sent back to Triple-A in early May. His numbers were rough — a 12.00 ERA with five walks and just three strikeouts.
Cincinnati eventually dealt Díaz to Los Angeles in exchange for minor league right-hander Mike Villani, a former 14th-round pick. The Dodgers hoped they could help him rediscover his 2023 form, but Díaz continued to struggle. Though he showed slight improvement, posting a 5.00 ERA over nine innings, the Dodgers ultimately chose to part ways as they prepared for a postseason run.
Now, the Braves are taking a chance on turning Díaz back into a reliable bullpen arm. Atlanta already features another former Reds closer, Raisel Iglesias, and recently added ex-Reds outfielder Jake Fraley following his DFA.
Díaz made headlines as a rookie in Cincinnati, but as many players learn, staying in the majors is often harder than getting there. Atlanta will be his third team this year — perhaps this time, things will finally turn around.
