Texas Tech star JT Toppin was kicked out of Saturday’s game against Houston after what many considered one of the “worst calls” they had seen.
At the time, Texas Tech was leading Houston 8-7 just four minutes into the game at the Fertitta Center in Houston, Texas. Toppin had possession of the ball just inside the 3-point line and was being double-teamed by the Cougars. As he jumped to pass to a teammate on the other side of the court, Toppin accidentally kicked Houston’s Joseph Tugler in the groin.
As a result, Toppin was ejected from the game for the incident.
Texas Tech coach Grant McCasland was furious about the decision and was ejected alongside Toppin.
Toppin only had one shot attempt and a rebound in 4 minutes of play. Fans were shocked by how quickly he was pulled from the game.
Texas Tech came into the game with a 16-4 record, ranked No. 22 in the nation, while Houston had a 17-3 record and was ranked No. 6.
JT Toppin, a transfer from New Mexico, entered the game averaging 16.4 points and 8.9 rebounds per game. He is the Red Raiders’ top scorer and rebounder.
