The New York Mets could be considering one of the most unconventional managerial hires in recent MLB history. After moving on from Carlos Mendoza, the club has been linked to a legendary name who brings an extraordinary playing résumé but limited managerial experience: Albert Pujols.
Pujols, an 11-time All-Star and two-time World Series champion, has emerged as an intriguing potential candidate for the Mets’ next managerial position. ESPN’s Jeff Passan recently discussed the possibility of Pujols taking over in New York, describing the idea as a legitimate possibility following Mendoza’s departure.
The idea would represent a major change in direction for the Mets. Rather than immediately turning to another established MLB manager, New York could choose a future Hall of Famer whose reputation, experience and knowledge of the game could bring a different voice to the clubhouse.
Pujols spent 22 seasons in the major leagues and established himself as one of the greatest hitters of his generation. He finished his playing career with more than 700 home runs, 3,000 hits and 3,000-plus runs batted in, while earning 11 All-Star selections and three National League MVP Awards. His championship résumé includes World Series titles with the St. Louis Cardinals in 2006 and 2011.
That experience could be particularly attractive to the Mets as they attempt to reshape the organization.
Mendoza’s tenure ended during the 2026 season after the Mets struggled badly out of the gate. New York’s 34–47 start ultimately led to the decision to make a managerial change, bringing an early end to Mendoza’s third season at the helm.
The decision came despite Mendoza having previously guided the Mets to an 89–73 record and the National League Championship Series in his first season. He had been recognized as a finalist for NL Manager of the Year after that impressive turnaround.
However, the Mets’ recent struggles created pressure for a new direction.
Pujols would certainly provide instant credibility. Players would be working with someone who experienced virtually every level of pressure during an extraordinary MLB career. He played in postseason games, World Series contests and high-pressure situations throughout his career and became one of baseball’s most respected figures.
There would also be questions.
Managing a major-league team is very different from being a superstar player. Pujols has not previously managed an MLB club, meaning he would have to transition from being a player and respected veteran into someone responsible for lineups, pitching decisions, clubhouse management and the day-to-day demands of running a team.
Still, his recent experience around professional baseball could help. Pujols has remained involved in the sport since his retirement and has continued building his reputation as a respected baseball personality.
For the Mets, the potential hire would also create enormous attention around the organization. Pujols’ name alone would generate excitement among fans and immediately make him one of the most recognizable managers in baseball.
Nothing about the possibility should be interpreted as a finalized hiring. At this stage, Pujols is being discussed as a potential candidate rather than a confirmed replacement.
Nevertheless, the idea is fascinating. The Mets need a manager capable of commanding a talented roster and restoring confidence after a disappointing stretch. Pujols has never managed at this level, but few candidates could match his playing résumé, championship experience and understanding of what it takes to perform under pressure.
If New York ultimately takes the gamble, Albert Pujols could have an opportunity to begin an entirely new chapter of his baseball legacy — this time from the manager’s seat.
