Last offseason, the New York Mets spent big to land top free agent Juan Soto. This winter, they might make another splash by pursuing Kyle Tucker, who could be available from the Chicago Cubs.
The Mets weren’t considered early favorites for Tucker, but they are reportedly in the mix. Former MLB GM Jim Duquette, now a media analyst, noted Sunday night that three teams are actively pursuing Tucker: the Mets, Blue Jays, and Dodgers. “They have all met with the player, either in person or over Zoom, as part of the recruiting process for a star player,” Duquette added.
Duquette added, “It will be interesting to see if any of the three teams increase their offers soon to separate themselves from the others.”
The Mets’ biggest lineup weakness is centerfield, making it unlikely Tucker would play there. Still, pairing Tucker and Soto in the outfield corners and the heart of the lineup would create a formidable combination.
It’s unclear whether the Mets would follow the Dodgers’ approach of shorter-term deals with higher annual value, which could offer flexibility without committing to Tucker and Soto long-term.
Regardless, after missing the playoffs in 2025 following a major late-season collapse, adding Tucker would send a clear message that the Mets are determined not to repeat that disappointment.
