Rutschman followed that performance with another outstanding campaign in 2023, finishing with 5.5 fWAR while maintaining production similar to his impressive rookie season. The Red Sox are now hoping a change of scenery will help him rediscover that All-Star level of performance.
After bursting onto the scene in 2022, Adley Rutschman quickly established himself as one of baseball’s premier catchers. At just 24 years old, he produced an outstanding 5.6 fWAR during his rookie campaign, combining an .807 OPS with elite defense behind the plate. He followed that performance with another excellent season in 2023, posting 5.5 fWAR while maintaining nearly the same level of offensive and defensive production.
However, Rutschman’s performance began to decline in his third season. By 2025, he endured the toughest campaign of his career, finishing with a below-average 93 wRC+ as his defensive metrics also slipped. A lingering oblique injury affected him throughout much of the season, providing some explanation for his struggles.
This year, the 28-year-old has shown encouraging signs of a rebound. Through 67 games, he has hit eight home runs, driven in 47 runs, and posted a .764 OPS. His defensive performance has also improved significantly, putting him on pace to exceed 4 fWAR for the season. While he has yet to fully recapture the dominant form he displayed during his first two years in the majors, he has performed well enough across multiple areas to justify Boston’s aggressive pursuit.
The biggest concern for the Red Sox is his current health. Rutschman is on the 10-day injured list with a wrist injury after being sidelined on July 20, and there is still no definitive timetable for when he will make his Boston debut.
There is little question that Adley Rutschman represents a significant upgrade over Connor Wong and Carlos Narváez, Boston’s primary catchers during the 2026 season. Offensively, he offers far more production, while his defensive skills behind the plate are considered to be on an entirely different level.
