The Boston Red Sox have made several moves to enhance their roster for the 2024 season. They started by adding Garrett Crochet and Walker Buehler to their starting rotation, though these two additions alone aren’t enough to elevate Boston to one of the league’s top pitching staffs.
The Red Sox may pursue a major trade to acquire a former Cy Young winner and further strengthen their pitching depth. Miami Marlins ace Sandy Alcantara could be on the trade block this year, making the Red Sox an ideal destination for the star pitcher.
Alcantara was dominant in 2022, posting a 2.28 ERA over 228.2 innings. However, his performance dipped in 2023, with a more modest 4.14 ERA. A torn UCL then sidelined him for the entire 2024 season, raising questions about his recovery.
But this spring, Alcantara has proven the doubters wrong, hitting 98-100 MPH with his fastball and showing his trademark command and movement from his Cy Young-winning campaign. If he starts the season strong, the Marlins will likely put him on the trade market.
The Red Sox, who have been aggressive in their pursuit of upgrades, could be well-positioned to make a deal, with potential trade assets like Wilyer Abreu and Triston Casas, along with other top prospects. If Alcantara becomes available, Boston is likely to aggressively pursue him.
