The New York Yankees’ infield has struggled this season. Since coming off the injured list, DJ LeMahieu has primarily handled second base duties.
With LeMahieu at second base, Jazz Chisholm Jr. has shifted to third, where his defense isn’t as solid. At the same time, LeMahieu has struggled both defensively and at the plate, posting a .239/.312/.319 slash line. The Yankees would be wise to upgrade their infield with a stronger bat—ideally at third base—allowing Chisholm to return to his more natural position at second.
Joel Reuter of Bleacher Report suggested a trade that would send Eugenio Suárez from the Arizona Diamondbacks to the New York Yankees in return for a prospect.
- Yankees receive: 3B Eugenio Suárez
- Diamondbacks receive: Carlos Lagrange (Yankees No. 17 prospect)
The Diamondbacks could be a key team to monitor at this year’s trade deadline. As of Tuesday, they sat in fourth place in the National League West and are at risk of slipping out of the wild card race. Injuries to Corbin Burnes and Corbin Carroll have created a challenging situation for the team.
If the Diamondbacks decide to sell, Eugenio Suárez could be among the first to go. The 33-year-old is currently playing on a \$15 million club option and is set to become a free agent after the season. He originally signed a seven-year, \$66 million contract back in 2018.
This season, Suárez is slashing .257/.324/.570 with 26 home runs and a National League-leading 69 RBIs. A former All-Star with over 300 career home runs, he would be a strong candidate to take over as the Yankees’ everyday third baseman.
