The New York Yankees’ infield has underperformed this season. Since returning from the injured list, DJ LeMahieu has primarily played second base, which has shifted Jazz Chisholm Jr. to third base — a position where his defensive skills are less effective. LeMahieu himself has struggled both defensively and at the plate, with a batting line of .239/.312/.319. To strengthen their lineup, the Yankees could use a stronger hitter, ideally a third baseman, allowing Chisholm to return to second base.
Joel Reuter of Bleacher Report suggested a trade that could help: acquiring third baseman Eugenio Suárez from the Arizona Diamondbacks in exchange for Yankees prospect Carlos Lagrange (ranked No. 17 in the organization).
The Diamondbacks, currently fourth in the NL West as of Tuesday, are dealing with key injuries to Corbin Burnes and Corbin Carroll and may soon fall out of playoff contention. If they decide to sell at the trade deadline, Suárez could be one of the first to go. He’s playing under a $15 million club option this year — part of a seven-year, $66 million contract he signed in 2018 — and will become a free agent after the season.
Suárez, 33, has been productive in 2025, hitting .257/.324/.570 with 26 home runs and a league-leading 69 RBIs. A former All-Star with over 300 career home runs, he could be a strong everyday third base option for the Yankees.
