Boston was reportedly looking for a major addition at shortstop and identified De La Cruz as one of the biggest possible targets on the market. According to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, the Red Sox tried to convince Cincinnati to part with its young superstar, but the Reds ultimately declined to make the blockbuster move.
The pursuit reportedly went beyond simply checking on his availability. Earlier reporting indicated that Boston actually made an offer for De La Cruz, although Cincinnati’s asking price was considered extremely high. The Reds were willing to listen to potential offers but apparently never received a package they considered sufficient.
That makes the failed pursuit particularly interesting for Red Sox fans. Boston clearly viewed shortstop as an area worth upgrading, and De La Cruz would have represented an enormous addition to the team’s long-term core.

The possibility of De La Cruz joining Boston would have been especially fascinating because of the team’s current competitive position. The Red Sox have surged into playoff contention and have been building momentum, making the front office’s deadline decisions even more significant.
Although Boston didn’t land De La Cruz, the attempt sends a clear message about the organization’s ambitions.
