An infielder who spent parts of four seasons in MLB and was still playing professionally in Latin America in 2025, announced his retirement.
Dilson Herrera, who made his MLB debut with the New York Mets in 2014 and appeared in parts of four major league seasons, announced his retirement on Instagram.
“After many years of dedication, sacrifice, and passion, I’ve decided to officially retire from professional baseball,” Herrera wrote in Spanish.
“Baseball has given me everything, and today I remain connected to this sport with the same love and respect as always,” Herrera added.
Herrera appeared in 105 major league games with the Mets from 2014–15, the Cincinnati Reds in 2018, and the Baltimore Orioles in 2020. He finishes his MLB career with a .199 batting average, 11 home runs, and 28 RBIs.
Once considered one of the New York Mets’ top prospects, Herrera was selected to participate in the MLB Futures Game in both 2013 and 2016. He made his major league debut in August 2014 as the youngest player in MLB at the time, but as the Mets surged toward the World Series in 2015, he was eventually overtaken on the depth chart and never appeared in a postseason game.
Herrera continued his professional career abroad after being released by the Toronto Blue Jays in August 2021, spending time in international leagues as he looked to extend his playing days before ultimately deciding to step away from the game.
During the 2025 season, Herrera suited up in both his home country of Colombia and in Mexico before officially bringing his playing career to an end.
His final professional stint in the United States came in 2022, when he appeared in 88 games for the Staten Island FerryHawks of the independent Atlantic League. That year, he posted a .255/.338/.374 slash line with four home runs.
Herrera’s retirement announcement drew heartfelt messages from former teammates. Ex-Mets outfielder Juan Lagares offered his support in Spanish, writing, “Showers of blessings to you, my little brother, and to your family.” Carlos Gómez also shared a tribute on Instagram, saying, “My brother, I had the honor of playing alongside you, and you were one of my favorite teammates. Blessings to you as you enjoy this new chapter of life with your family and your son. A big hug. What an incredible career, both on and off the field.”
