Reportedly, the Seattle Mariners are bringing back a familiar name—though not the one many fans may have anticipated. Aram Leighton of Just Baseball reports that the Mariners have reached an agreement with infielder Patrick Wisdom on a minor league deal that includes an invitation to major league spring training.
Now 34, Wisdom has previous ties to the organization. He originally signed with Seattle in November 2019, but his stint was short-lived. Following the shortened 2020 season, the Mariners released him in August, and he never appeared in a game for the club.

Selected in the first round of the 2012 MLB Draft by the St. Louis Cardinals, Wisdom spent the early part of his career moving between organizations before later suiting up for the Texas Rangers and, most prominently, the Chicago Cubs.
Wisdom enjoyed his most productive run in Chicago from 2021 through 2023, where his offensive profile was defined by a boom-or-bust approach. He launched at least 23 home runs in each of those three seasons, cementing his reputation as a legitimate power bat. However, that production came with a significant drawback, as he struck out in at least 34 percent of his plate appearances in each of those years.
Overall, Wisdom crushed 76 home runs across 1,211 plate appearances from 2021 to 2023, though he also struck out at a steep 36.9 percent rate. That stretch produced a .214/.298/.473 slash line, and despite the low batting average and high strikeout totals, he still finished with a respectable 111 wRC+ over those three seasons.
In 2024, Wisdom was used primarily in a bench role and struggled to make an impact. Across 174 plate appearances, he posted a .171/.237/.392 slash line and was unable to rediscover the power that had defined his earlier success.
Wisdom spent the 2025 campaign with the Kia Tigers in the Korean Baseball Organization, where he displayed encouraging signs of a rebound. He blasted 35 home runs while posting a .236/.321/.535 slash line and a 126 wRC+, suggesting a resurgence in his offensive production. Defensively, Wisdom saw most of his action at first base and third base.
