The Philadelphia Phillies are entering the offseason with a primary focus on re-signing designated hitter Kyle Schwarber, while also weighing the future of catcher J.T. Realmuto. Although Schwarber remains the top priority, Realmuto’s status is another key decision for the front office.
Realmuto, now 34, isn’t expected to draw a massive free-agent market, but the Boston Red Sox have shown interest, and the catcher-needy Texas Rangers could also look at him as an option this winter.
However, a recent report from Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic suggests encouraging news for the Phillies. According to Rosenthal, Texas’ plans at the catcher position may not involve pursuing Realmuto, improving Philadelphia’s chances of bringing back their veteran backstop.
“The Rangers must rebuild their bullpen and find a replacement for Jonah Heim, who was non-tendered,” Rosenthal reports. “However, team sources say Texas does not have the payroll flexibility to pursue top free-agent catcher J.T. Realmuto, an Oklahoma native.”
Even though Texas has an obvious need behind the plate, their financial limitations will keep them from making a serious bid for Realmuto this offseason.
Unlike the buzz around Schwarber—whose hometown Cincinnati Reds are pushing hard to bring him back—the Rangers are not expected to mount a similar effort for Realmuto.
