Baseball analyst Matt Grazel from TBOH expressed caution about re-signing Schwarber long term. “The Phillies should not re-sign Schwarber to a multi-year contract. Not signing him will hurt the club offensively and the front office would need to have a plan to replace the home run hitter. However, what if they bring him back for multiple years and he begins to decline? Either decision brings a certain amount of risk,” Grazel said. He emphasized that the Phillies’ roster needs significant changes, and while unpopular, moving on from Schwarber might be the bold shakeup the team requires.
If Philadelphia opts against re-signing Schwarber, one of the biggest concerns would be the prospect of him joining a division rival. The New York Mets are reportedly interested in swooping in, which could pose a nightmare scenario for Phillies fans.
Sportsnaut’s Matt Higgins pointed out that the Mets, who suffered a postseason miss despite an early lead as the best team in baseball, are eager to make a splash. “Owner Steve Cohen will do whatever it takes to bring a World Series championship back to Queens, and signing Schwarber would move them closer, especially if the Mets lose Pete Alonso in free agency. A lineup of Schwarber, Francisco Lindor, and Juan Soto would be incredibly dangerous,” Higgins noted.
However, acquiring Schwarber won’t come cheap. According to Scott Lauber of The Philadelphia Inquirer, Schwarber is reportedly seeking a five-year contract worth about $30 million annually, which could total around $150 million. TBOH’s Matt Davis stressed that such a price is substantial for a slugger who will turn 33 next season, raising concerns about long-term value.
The Mets’ interest in Schwarber also relates to their need to replace Pete Alonso, who could depart in free agency. Signing Schwarber would allow Mark Vientos to transition to first base, filling gaps in the lineup. For Phillies supporters, seeing Schwarber don a Mets jersey would certainly be a bitter pill.
Ultimately, bringing Schwarber to New York could dramatically improve the Mets’ playoff odds after a disappointing campaign. Yet, every team, including the Mets and Phillies, will likely have contingency plans to navigate the offseason’s uncertainties and preserve flexibility.
