The Miami Marlins and New York Yankees could swing a blockbuster trade involving a star pitcher before the MLB trade deadline.
The Miami Marlins could have several players on the trade block ahead of the MLB deadline, and perhaps the most intriguing is right-hander Edward Cabrera. With the New York Yankees in need of pitching depth, especially due to injuries in their rotation, Cabrera could be a compelling target.
Cabrera is having a strong 2025 season, particularly in recent months where he’s hit his stride. The 27-year-old has posted a 3.33 ERA, giving up just 66 hits while striking out 80 batters over 78.1 innings. Once a highly touted prospect, Cabrera had trouble with command in his early major league years but appears to have turned a corner this season.
One trade scenario, proposed by Alex Carver of Fish on First, involves Cabrera heading to the Yankees in exchange for top infield prospect George Lombard Jr., pitcher Cam Schlitter, and shortstop Roderick Arias. This would be a significant return for Miami. Lombard is known for his defensive upside and improving bat, Schlitter boasts a 2.82 ERA and an impressive 11.6 strikeouts per nine innings between Double-A and Triple-A, and while Arias has struggled in 2025, he still shows notable power potential.
The main question is whether the Yankees would be willing to part with that kind of prospect capital. They have a history of being cautious with their top young players. Additionally, the Marlins aren’t under pressure to trade Cabrera, as he remains under team control through the 2028 season.
While a deal isn’t imminent, Miami is expected to listen to offers. Still, the odds currently favor Cabrera staying put past the July 31 deadline.
