The Toronto Maple Leafs have appointed Derek Lalonde as an assistant coach, marking his return to the NHL coaching ranks. Lalonde, 52, previously served as the head coach of the Detroit Red Wings from 2022 to midseason 2024–25, compiling an 89–86–23 record. His tenure ended in December 2024 following a 13–17–4 start to the season, leading to his dismissal and the hiring of Todd McLellan as his successor.
Prior to his head coaching role in Detroit, Lalonde was an assistant coach with the Tampa Bay Lightning from 2018 to 2022, contributing to the team’s back-to-back Stanley Cup victories in 2020 and 2021. His coaching journey began in the lower leagues, including the ECHL, AHL, and USHL, where he achieved notable success, such as leading the Toledo Walleye to two consecutive Brabham Cup titles .
Lalonde’s hiring fills a vacancy left by Lane Lambert, who departed the Maple Leafs to become the head coach of the Seattle Kraken in May 2025. Lambert had joined Toronto’s coaching staff in June 2024 but left after just one season. The Maple Leafs have also parted ways with assistant coach Dean Chynoweth, who had been with the team since 2021–22 .
With his extensive coaching experience, including a tenure as head coach in the NHL, Lalonde is expected to bring valuable insights and leadership to the Maple Leafs’ coaching staff. His familiarity with both assistant and head coaching roles equips him to contribute effectively to the team’s strategies and development.
