David Quinn making Rangers return on Mike Sullivan’s coaching staff
David Quinn is returning to the New York Rangers as an assistant coach on Mike Sullivan’s staff, following their recent collaboration in Pittsburgh. Quinn, who previously coached the Rangers from 2018 to 2021, will rejoin his first NHL club. Joe Sacco and Ty Hennes will also be part of the Rangers’ coaching staff, though their official titles have not yet been announced.
Quinn initially took over the Rangers after a successful tenure at Boston University and was tasked with leading a rebuilding effort after the team issued a public letter to fans in 2017. During his original stint, Quinn recorded a 96-87-25 record and only made the 2020 qualifying-round playoffs during the COVID-shortened season. He was dismissed in 2021 along with general manager Jeff Gorton and president John Davidson following a disappointing finish highlighted by a notorious incident involving Capitals player Tom Wilson.

Sacco leaves his interim head coach role with the Boston Bruins after 12 seasons, while Hennes continues his tenure under Sullivan after two seasons in Pittsburgh.
Quinn’s return to the Rangers marks a reunion with Sullivan, who previously served as an assistant coach for the team from 2009 to 2013. Sullivan was appointed as the new head coach of the Rangers in May 2025, replacing Peter Laviolette after the team’s failure to qualify for the playoffs. Sullivan brings a wealth of experience, including leading the Pittsburgh Penguins to consecutive Stanley Cup titles in 2016 and 2017.
The addition of Quinn to Sullivan’s coaching staff is expected to provide valuable experience and leadership to the Rangers as they look to improve their performance in the upcoming season.
