Lions Gets Bad News and Good News as they Cut ties with their key defensive Barrier

Lions Cut Ties With Rookie, Sign Ex-Giants CB as Replacement

The Detroit Lions have made a notable adjustment to their defensive backfield, waiving rookie cornerback Steven Gilmore and signing veteran cornerback Amani Oruwariye, a former starter with the New York Giants and previously with the Lions. The move signals a shift toward experience as the team prepares for a competitive NFC North campaign.

Gilmore, who joined the Lions as an undrafted free agent out of Marshall, showed flashes of potential during training camp and preseason action but ultimately couldn’t secure a long-term role on the active roster. With depth concerns and playoff aspirations, Detroit opted to bring in a proven player to stabilize the secondary.

Oruwariye, originally drafted by the Lions in 2019, had a breakout 2021 season with six interceptions before struggling with consistency. After a brief stint with the Giants in 2023, he now returns to Detroit looking to rejuvenate his career and contribute to a defense that has undergone considerable transformation this offseason.

The Lions have emphasized building a tougher, more disciplined defense after their playoff push in 2024. Oruwariye’s familiarity with the system and NFL experience should provide immediate value, especially in nickel and dime packages where depth is critical.

As the season approaches, the team is clearly balancing youth development with the need for veteran leadership. While parting with a promising rookie is always tough, the Lions hope this move helps solidify a secondary that must contend with high-powered offenses in the NFC.
