It looks like Trent Williams will miss his second consecutive game this weekend due to an ankle injury.
Williams did not practice on Wednesday, and he was seen using a knee scooter in the locker room, which indicates that his ankle is being elevated while he avoids putting weight on it.
Williams sustained the injury a few weeks ago during the 49ers’ 23-20 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The following week, he received a Toradol shot and played in the team’s 20-17 loss to the Seattle Seahawks. However, it’s likely that his injury worsened during that game, as he was unable to play in last Sunday’s 38-10 loss to the Packers and is now using a knee scooter around the facility.
At 36 years old, Williams has not played a full season since 2013 and usually misses one or two games each year. If history is any guide, he may return when the 49ers face the Bears and Rams in the next two home games, both of which are considered winnable.
This offseason, the 49ers restructured Williams’ contract, giving him a $25.69 million signing bonus after he missed OTAs, minicamp, and training camp. He is under contract until 2026, when he’ll be 38. Currently, Williams is ranked as the fifth-highest-graded offensive tackle in the NFL according to Pro Football Focus.
