The New York Yankees are poised to contend for a World Series title this season, though they may seek to bolster their roster as the season progresses.Currently holding the second spot in the American League East with a 23-13 record, the Yankees boast a strong lineup. While they have the pieces to compete, especially with key players returning from injury soon, additional acquisitions wouldn’t hurt.
As the trade deadline approaches, there will likely be enticing players available, and the Yankees appear committed to their 2024 campaign. Surprisingly, Toronto Blue Jays ace Yusei Kikuchi could become available if the Blue Jays fail to reverse their fortunes, according to The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal.
Rosenthal noted, “The Blue Jays are currently at the bottom of the American League East, trailing by seven-and-a-half games, despite their record-setting $225 million payroll. With top young stars Bo Bichette and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. entering free agency after next season, they may become available if the team doesn’t improve.”
Additionally, key members of the Blue Jays pitching staff, Jordan Romano and Chris Bassitt, are set to become free agents after 2025. There are also significant free agents at the end of this season, including Kikuchi, Justin Turner, and Kevin Kiermaier.Despite Toronto’s struggles, Kikuchi has performed well in the 2024 season, boasting a 2.72 ERA in seven starts with a 43-to-9 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 39 2/3 innings pitched.
Given his impending free agency, a trade for Kikuchi wouldn’t be surprising. While trading within the division presents challenges, the Yankees have previously completed trades with the Boston Red Sox, indicating a willingness to do so.While a trade is unlikely, Kikuchi could provide a significant boost to the Yankees if acquired.
