Mariners Add Veteran Reliever Scott Effross on Minor-League Deal

The Seattle Mariners have added another experienced arm to their pitching depth, signing veteran reliever Scott Effross to a minor-league contract. While the move does not immediately affect Seattle’s major-league roster, it gives the organization another experienced pitcher who could potentially emerge as an option for the bullpen later in the season.

Effross never appeared in a major-league game for the Detroit Tigers. Instead, the right-hander spent the 2026 season with the Toledo Mud Hens, Detroit’s Triple-A affiliate. After being released by the Tigers on August 8, Effross quickly found another opportunity. Just four days later, the Mariners brought him into the organization and assigned him to Triple-A Tacoma.

The quick turnaround is significant for a veteran pitcher trying to get his career back on track. Rather than remaining on the open market for an extended period, Effross immediately received another chance to continue pitching in a professional organization with a potential path back to the major leagues.

At 32 years old, Effross brings something Seattle cannot necessarily get from an inexperienced minor-league pitcher: previous major-league experience. Before joining the Tigers’ organization, he spent time with the Chicago Cubs and New York Yankees and accumulated 85.1 innings in the majors.

During that time, Effross recorded a 3.59 career ERA, 88 strikeouts and a 1.148 WHIP. His career ERA+ of 118 also indicates that he was an above-average pitcher overall during his major-league career.

Those numbers help explain why Seattle was willing to take a chance on him despite his recent struggles.

Effross’ career has been somewhat unconventional. He originally established himself as a useful bullpen option because of his ability to generate outs without necessarily relying on overpowering velocity. His effectiveness came from his pitching approach, movement and ability to keep hitters uncomfortable.

However, injuries and inconsistent results have made it difficult for him to maintain a permanent place in a major-league bullpen.

His most recent MLB opportunity came with the Yankees in 2025. Effross appeared in 10.2 innings but struggled significantly, allowing 10 earned runs and 16 hits while striking out six batters. That performance made it difficult for him to secure another major-league role heading into the 2026 campaign.

Detroit nevertheless gave him an opportunity to rebuild his value in the minor leagues.

Unfortunately for Effross, the results in Triple-A were not strong enough to keep him in the Tigers organization. Over 38.2 innings in 2026, he posted a 4.19 ERA before Detroit ultimately released him.

That does not mean Seattle believes Effross is guaranteed to return to his previous form. Instead, the Mariners appear to be taking a calculated gamble on a pitcher with a proven major-league résumé.

For Seattle, there is very little downside to the move.

Effross will begin with Tacoma rather than taking a spot on the major-league roster. That allows the Mariners to evaluate him in a lower-pressure environment while monitoring his performance and determining whether he can make the necessary adjustments.

If he performs well, the organization could eventually consider him for a call-up.

That possibility could become particularly valuable as the season progresses.

The Mariners are competing in a demanding American League environment, and bullpen depth can become increasingly important during the final stretch of a season. Injuries, fatigue and performance issues can quickly force teams to search for additional pitching options.

Having an experienced pitcher already within the organization gives Seattle another potential solution.

Effross will now have an opportunity to work with Tacoma’s coaching staff and attempt to rediscover the effectiveness that once made him a reliable major-league reliever. A strong stretch with the Rainiers could potentially change the perception surrounding him and put him back on Seattle’s radar.

The timing also gives him a chance to make an immediate impression.

Rather than having to wait until the offseason to find another organization, Effross can immediately begin working toward another major-league opportunity. For a veteran pitcher, that can be extremely valuable.

Seattle’s decision also fits the broader strategy teams often use during the second half of the season. Organizations competing for postseason spots need as much pitching depth as possible, and minor-league additions can sometimes provide unexpected solutions.

Not every signing becomes a major contributor, but the Mariners only need one or two of these depth moves to work out for them to become worthwhile.

Effross’ previous MLB numbers provide some reason for optimism. His career 3.59 ERA and 118 ERA+ demonstrate that he has already shown an ability to succeed against major-league hitters. The challenge now is determining whether he can get back to that level after his recent struggles.

His experience with the Cubs and Yankees could also be useful. Pitching in major markets and high-pressure situations gives Effross an understanding of what is required at the highest level.

For the Mariners, the goal will be to determine whether there is still enough left in his arm to make that experience useful.

The move also gives Effross something important: another opportunity.

Being released by one organization can be difficult for any veteran, particularly after spending an entire season trying to establish himself. But Seattle’s willingness to give him another chance means his major-league career is not necessarily finished.

He now has a fresh environment, a new coaching staff and another organization willing to evaluate what he can offer.

The Mariners will not need to rush the process. Effross can work his way into form at Tacoma while the organization evaluates his command, effectiveness and overall consistency.

If he begins dominating Triple-A hitters, the conversation could change quickly.

Seattle could then have a veteran reliever ready to provide innings, especially if the major-league bullpen needs reinforcement. That is exactly the type of depth that can become valuable during a playoff push.

For now, however, expectations should remain measured.

This is not a major-league signing, and Effross is not guaranteed a spot on Seattle’s active roster. He will have to earn his way back to the majors through his performance in Tacoma.

Still, the Mariners are getting an experienced pitcher at minimal risk. If Effross struggles, Seattle can simply move on. If he finds his form, the organization could have another experienced bullpen option waiting in Triple-A.

That makes the signing an intriguing low-risk move for a team that needs to maximize its pitching depth.

For Effross, meanwhile, the objective is straightforward: pitch well enough to force Seattle to notice.

His career has already demonstrated that he can be effective at the major-league level. Now, after a difficult 2026 season in Detroit’s system, he has another opportunity to prove that he still belongs there.

The Mariners may not know yet whether Effross will become an important part of their bullpen. But by bringing him into the organization, they have given themselves another potential pitching option while giving a veteran reliever one more chance to revive his MLB career.

What happens next will depend entirely on what Effross does in Tacoma. If he can turn around his recent results and rediscover the form that produced a 3.59 career ERA, this minor-league signing could eventually become much more meaningful for Seattle.
