CHICAGO (AP) — Edward Cabrera finalized a one-year, $4.45 million contract with the Chicago Cubs on Thursday, one day after the club acquired the right-hander in a trade from the Miami Marlins.
Set to turn 28 in April, Cabrera had been arbitration-eligible. He posted an 8–7 record with a 3.53 ERA last season, setting career highs with 26 starts and 137⅔ innings. The Cubs acquired him in exchange for outfielder Owen Caissie and infield prospects Cristian Hernández and Edgardo De León.
The 6-foot-5 Cabrera debuted in the majors with Miami in 2021 and owns a 25–29 record with a 4.07 ERA across 87 career starts, along with two relief appearances.
Chicago also reached one-year agreements with left-hander Justin Steele for $6.775 million and right-hander Javier Assad for $1.8 million.
Steele, 30, missed most of last season after undergoing elbow surgery on April 18. He previously enjoyed a breakout campaign in 2023, going 16–5 with a 3.06 ERA while making a career-high 30 starts.
