SF Giants reportedly add former Padres, Rays pitching voice to the coaching staff
The San Francisco Giants have reportedly added another key piece to their rapidly evolving coaching staff. According to Susan Slusser of The San Francisco Chronicle, the Giants are set to hire Christian Wonders as an assistant pitching coach, continuing the organization’s trend of bringing in analytically driven and development-focused voices.
This addition is part of a broader overhaul under new manager Tony Vitello, whose staff has not yet been formally announced but has begun to take shape through multiple confirmed hires. Former San Diego Padres manager Jayce Tingler is expected to join the staff as Vitello’s bench coach after spending the past four seasons working under Rocco Baldelli in Minnesota. Tingler’s relationship with Vitello dates back to their playing days at the University of Missouri in the early 2000s, providing the new staff with an immediate connection and leadership foundation.
On the hitting side, Hunter Mense is expected to come aboard after serving as an assistant hitting coach for the Toronto Blue Jays for the last four years, including their 2025 World Series run. Though Toronto ultimately fell to the Los Angeles Dodgers in seven games, Mense earned praise for his work with a lineup that became one of baseball’s most consistent offensive units.
The Giants have also made notable pitching hires in Justin Meccage and Frank Anderson. Meccage brings instructional and developmental experience from stints in the Pittsburgh Pirates and Milwaukee Brewers systems, while Anderson, who spent eight seasons as the pitching coach at the University of Tennessee, is expected to serve in an instructional or coordinator capacity within the organization.
Christian Wonders now becomes the latest addition to the pitching department. Wonders has built a reputation as a forward-thinking pitching mind, shaped by a career that blends biomechanics, data-driven training, and traditional instruction. He previously spent three years at Cressey Sports Performance as a pitching coordinator—an organization regarded as a major competitor to Driveline in the modern pitching development landscape.
More recently, Wonders spent four seasons as a roving instructor with the San Diego Padres, followed by two years as a minor league pitching coordinator in the Tampa Bay Rays organization. Both franchises are known for their elite pitching development pipelines, giving Wonders a strong pedigree as he arrives in San Francisco.
Despite the sweeping changes made this offseason, the Giants have retained two members of the previous coaching staff: assistant hitting coach Oscar Bernard and quality control coach Taira Uematsu. Their continuity will complement the fresh perspectives brought in by Vitello’s new hires.
The addition of Wonders underscores the Giants’ commitment to modernizing their pitching infrastructure and building a staff rooted in innovation, development, and organizational alignment.
