Edmonton Oilers with last ditch plan to aquire most valuable asset of all, insider says with about $1.35 to $1.85 million in additional space

Oilers Still in the Hunt for NHL’s Most Coveted Asset: Cap Space

The Edmonton Oilers have already made significant moves this summer. They re-signed star defenceman Evan Bouchard, cleared out cap space by moving Viktor Arvidsson and Evander Kane, and added depth and grit up front with the signings of Andrew Mangiapane and Curtis Lazar.

But their offseason work isn’t done yet.

Despite bolstering their roster, the Oilers remain in pursuit of what has become the most valuable currency in today’s NHL: salary cap space. For a contending team already pressed up against the ceiling, cap flexibility is as essential as elite talent. It’s the key to upgrading not only for the upcoming season but also for critical moments down the line — especially as they look ahead to the 2026 NHL trade deadline.

With their core locked in and expectations sky-high, the Oilers are navigating a delicate balance between staying competitive now and maintaining the flexibility to make bold moves when they matter most.

It’s extra cap space that brought Edmonton Jake Walman and brought Florida Brad Marchand and Seth Jones at the 2025 deadline. That cap space came through key players being injured late in the season, allowing Edmonton and Florida to bring in more salary at the trade deadline, but if the NHL cracks down on that practice for the 2026 playoffs, building up cap space through careful cap management through the season will become all important in any team’s Stanley Cup hopes.
