Major Breaking: Celtics big man option signs with Grizzlies

When the Rockets waived big man Jock Landale, it opened up another center option in free agency. Since the Celtics are thin at that position, Landale could have been a potential fit. However, Landale chose to sign with the Memphis Grizzlies, who reshuffled their frontcourt, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.

Memphis not only added Landale but also traded center Jay Huff to the Pacers for draft picks. So, two big men experienced moves over the weekend. While the Celtics could have offered Landale playing time, he opted for the Grizzlies instead.

The Celtics face frontcourt challenges, having lost Luke Kornet to the Spurs and with Al Horford rumored to be leaving this offseason. Although they signed Luka Garza, the big man position remains uncertain. Currently, only Neemias Queta, Xavier Tillman, and Garza are under contract.

There aren’t many free-agent big men left at this point in the offseason. The Celtics are expected to keep making moves as they adjust their roster, especially since they’re just over the second salary cap apron after some minor signings.

Boston reduced payroll significantly this summer by trading Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis in separate deals. Despite that, the Celtics are now thin in the frontcourt and will likely continue retooling next season. Expect them to stay active as they work to finalize their roster.
