Former Maple Leafs Forward  Set to Join Canadian Rival

The Toronto Maple Leafs are set to lose another familiar name from their organization, with former forward Alex Nylander reportedly heading to a Canadian rival as he looks to revive his NHL career.

Nylander is expected to attend the Calgary Flames’ training camp on a professional tryout (PTO), according to PuckPedia. The move gives the 28-year-old forward another opportunity to prove that he can still contribute at the NHL level after struggling to establish himself as a regular in Toronto.

Nylander originally arrived in Toronto with plenty of potential. The eighth overall selection in the 2016 NHL Draft, he was once viewed as a player capable of becoming a significant offensive contributor. However, his NHL career has not developed as expected, and consistency has remained one of the biggest challenges throughout his journey.

His time with the Maple Leafs was particularly difficult. Over the past two seasons, Nylander appeared in only five regular-season games for Toronto and failed to record a point. That limited opportunity ultimately left him looking for another organization where he could compete for a bigger role.

Calgary could provide exactly that opportunity.

The Flames are not simply bringing Nylander in because of his name or draft pedigree. His recent production in the American Hockey League gives the organization a reason to take a closer look. Last season, he reportedly recorded 24 goals and 53 points in 65 AHL games, demonstrating that his offensive ability has not disappeared.

That contrast between his AHL success and NHL struggles is what makes the move particularly interesting. Nylander has shown that he can produce consistently against strong minor-league competition, but the challenge has always been translating that production into sustained NHL success.

Across 126 NHL games in his career, Nylander has recorded 25 goals and 49 points. Those numbers are not what many expected when he was selected eighth overall, but they also suggest that there is still some offensive potential for Calgary to explore.

His AHL résumé is even more impressive. Nylander has accumulated 89 goals and 179 points over his last 227 AHL games while spending time with the Penguins, Blue Jackets and Maple Leafs organizations. That level of production could make him an intriguing depth option if he can carry some of that confidence into training camp.

For Toronto, Nylander’s departure is unlikely to create a major hole on the NHL roster given how little he played for the club. Still, there could be a sense of frustration surrounding the move because the organization once hoped he might become a useful depth scorer.

For Calgary, meanwhile, the risk is minimal. A PTO does not guarantee Nylander a roster spot, but it gives him a chance to compete for one. If he impresses during camp and preseason action, the Flames could potentially find themselves with an inexpensive offensive option who has something to prove.

The biggest question will be whether Nylander can finally turn his minor-league production into NHL consistency.

At 28, time is becoming increasingly important. Another strong AHL season could keep his professional career moving, but an impressive training camp could give him something much more valuable: another opportunity to establish himself as an NHL regular.

For Maple Leafs fans, it will also be worth watching what happens next. Seeing a former Toronto player potentially find success with a Canadian rival could make Nylander’s Calgary opportunity an interesting storyline throughout training camp.

For now, though, the move remains a chance rather than a guarantee. Nylander is expected to enter Calgary’s camp on a PTO, meaning he will have to earn his place.

If he can rediscover the offensive confidence he has displayed in the AHL, the Flames may have found an intriguing player worth taking a chance on.
