The New York Mets have released veteran infielder Andy Ibáñez ahead of their three-game series against the Washington Nationals at Citi Field. The move was announced after Ibáñez had spent much of the season in the minor leagues following his earlier stint with the Mets.
Ibáñez, 33, has six seasons of MLB experience dating back to his 2021 debut with the Texas Rangers. He later became a useful contributor for the Detroit Tigers, appearing in 304 games from 2023 through 2025 and producing 3.8 bWAR during that stretch.
The Mets acquired Ibáñez after claiming him off waivers from the Oakland Athletics in April. New York designated him for assignment on May 12 before ultimately outrighting him to the minors. He appeared in only three games for the Mets, going 0-for-6 with two RBIs and one strikeout.
The timing is notable because New York is preparing to open a three-game home series against Washington on Friday, August 14. The Mets entered the series at 53-69, while the Nationals were 59-63.
Ibáñez had also dealt with an extended stint on the minor-league injured list, limiting his opportunities to establish himself in the organization. His release now gives him the opportunity to look for another organization while the Mets continue adjusting their roster for the final portion of the season.
For New York, the decision represents another piece of roster housekeeping rather than a major shake-up. Ibáñez had not been a significant part of the Mets’ plans at the major-league level, and his limited playing time made it difficult for him to carve out a role.
The move also highlights how quickly circumstances can change for veteran players. Ibáñez entered 2026 with a substantial amount of MLB experience, but after moving between organizations and spending significant time in the minors, he now finds himself looking for his next opportunity.
With the Nationals series beginning Friday, the Mets will turn their attention toward the players currently positioned to help them down the stretch.
