The New York Mets are facing another major change to their lineup after losing one of the most recognizable power hitters in franchise history.
Pete Alonso’s departure has left a significant hole in the middle of the Mets’ order, forcing the organization to explore how it can replace the production of one of its biggest offensive stars. Alonso ultimately left New York and signed a five-year, $155 million contract with the Baltimore Orioles, ending his long run with the Mets.
Before his departure, Alonso had established himself as one of the most productive power hitters in Mets history. His combination of home-run power, run production and durability made him a centerpiece of the New York lineup for years.
Replacing that production was never going to be easy.
The Mets entered the offseason needing to reshape their roster, with pitching also emerging as a major priority. That has created a difficult decision for the front office: spend heavily to find another established first baseman, or use an internal option and direct resources toward other areas of the roster.
One possibility that has received attention is Mark Vientos. According to a Sporting News report citing Sports Illustrated’s Zach Pressnell, Vientos could potentially move from third base to first base on a full-time basis. Such a move would allow the Mets to address the position internally while giving the front office greater flexibility to spend elsewhere.
Vientos would not necessarily be expected to duplicate everything Alonso brought to the lineup. Instead, the Mets could look to replace Alonso’s overall production through a combination of players rather than searching for one individual to fill the entire void.
That approach could become particularly important as New York attempts to strengthen its pitching staff. The Sporting News report noted that starting pitching was expected to be a major priority, making an inexpensive internal solution at first base potentially attractive.
The Mets’ decision also reflects the larger changes taking place throughout the organization following a disappointing 2025 season. New York has undergone a significant roster overhaul, with several familiar names moving on while the club attempts to build a more balanced roster around its remaining core.
For Mets fans, the biggest question is whether the organization can replace Alonso’s impact without creating another weakness somewhere else.
There is no simple substitute for a player who can consistently change a game with one swing. But if Vientos can take another step offensively while the Mets strengthen other areas of the roster, the club could ultimately choose a different path rather than trying to find another superstar slugger immediately.
The challenge now is turning that plan into production.
