The Toronto Maple Leafs have secured another piece of defensive depth, keeping a veteran blue-liner in the organization as they continue preparing for the 2026-27 NHL season.
The player returning to Toronto is Troy Stecher, who has agreed to a two-year contract with the Maple Leafs. The deal is reportedly worth $1.35 million per season, giving Toronto additional stability and experience on the back end.
Stecher, 32, joined the Maple Leafs after Toronto claimed him off waivers from the Edmonton Oilers in November. He went on to appear in 58 games for Toronto during the 2025-26 season, recording three goals and 11 assists for 14 points.
His return provides the Maple Leafs with a familiar and experienced option on defense. Stecher has spent several seasons moving around the NHL and has built a reputation as a dependable depth defenseman capable of handling difficult assignments.
The decision to bring him back also gives Toronto some valuable continuity. The Maple Leafs are entering a new season with several changes to their roster, making it important to retain players who already understand the team’s system and expectations.
Stecher’s experience could become especially valuable over an 82-game schedule. Injuries are inevitable during an NHL season, and having an established veteran who can step into the lineup gives Toronto another layer of protection.

For Stecher, the agreement allows him to remain with a team where he had already established himself. The veteran reportedly expressed an interest in staying in Toronto, and the organization ultimately found a way to make that happen.
