The Baltimore Orioles acquired Alex Jackson from the New York Yankees on Sunday after Gary Sánchez became the team’s fourth catcher placed on the injured list.
Sánchez exited Saturday’s game against Atlanta due to right knee pain, and an MRI confirmed a sprain. Interim manager Tony Mansolino did not provide a timeline for Sánchez’s return.
With 14 players currently on the injured list, Baltimore sent the Yankees an international signing bonus pool allocation and either a player to be named later or cash in exchange for Jackson.
Two-time All-Star Adley Rutschman has been sidelined since June 19 with a left oblique strain, Maverick Handley has been out with a concussion following a collision with Yankees’ Jazz Chisholm Jr. on June 22, and Chadwick Tromp has missed games since June 30 due to a lower back strain.
Jacob Stallings, who took over for Sánchez in Saturday’s 10-inning 9-6 victory over the Braves, along with Jackson, who joined the team for Sunday’s game in Atlanta, will make up the new catching depth chart. Stallings’ contract was officially added from Triple-A Norfolk on Tuesday.
Mansolino expressed confidence that both Jackson and Stallings, who started Sunday’s game, have the necessary experience to quickly adapt and contribute.
Jackson, 29, batted .226 with 10 home runs in 44 games for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre this season. He debuted in the majors with Atlanta in 2019 and has also played for Miami and Milwaukee.
Mansolino noted that Jackson has “a lot of major league experience with several teams,” and praised the Yankees as a “very forward-thinking organization.”
To make room for Jackson on the roster, infielder Jorge Mateo, who last played on June 6 due to left elbow inflammation, was moved to the 60-day injured list.
