Breaking: Rangers Lands Another Blockbuster Deal Sign Of A Top Notch Player From An Outstanding Team.

The Texas Rangers have signed relief pitcher Jacob Webb to a one-year contract, the team announced yesterday. Since there was an available spot on the 40-man roster, no corresponding move was needed to accommodate him.

Webb, 31, spent the 2024 season with the Baltimore Orioles, pitching 56.2 innings over 60 appearances. He recorded 58 strikeouts, 27 walks, a 3.02 ERA, and a 3.52 FIP. Although Webb was arbitration-eligible for 2025, the Orioles non-tendered him, making him a free agent.

Originally drafted by the Atlanta Braves in the 18th round of the 2014 draft out of Tabor College in Hillsboro, Kansas, Webb debuted in the majors in 2019. He spent parts of 2019, 2020, and 2021 in the Braves’ bullpen. After a season in the minors in 2022, Webb was waived by the Braves in April, claimed by the Arizona Diamondbacks, and then returned to Atlanta in June. After being outrighted, he became a free agent and signed with the Los Angeles Angels in 2023. After being waived by the Angels in August, Webb was claimed by the Orioles and stayed with them until being non-tendered.

Webb pitches from a slightly sidearm angle and has career reverse splits. His primary pitches are a fastball, a sweeper (mostly used against right-handed batters), and a changeup (mostly used against lefties).

Although it’s somewhat surprising he received a major league deal, the contract is worth just $1.25 million, so the Rangers wouldn’t lose much if they decide to release him in spring training or early in the season. Given the Rangers’ bullpen losses and limited internal options, it makes sense for general manager Chris Young to explore several low-cost options for middle and late-inning roles.
