The Buffalo Bills made adjustments to their roster ahead of training camp, notably by waiving offensive lineman Tommy Doyle with an injury designation on June 4. This initially hinted at the end of Doyle’s tenure with the team. However, the following day, Doyle, the Bills’ fifth-round pick, returned after clearing waivers and landing on the reserve physically unable to perform (PUP) list, where he doesn’t count against the 90-man roster.
The situation leaves Doyle’s future uncertain, but there’s a possibility for a comeback. According to reports, there might be an update on his status from head coach Sean McDermott during the upcoming minicamp.
Following Doyle’s initial release, the Bills signed linebacker Shayne Simon, an undrafted player from Pittsburgh, securing his spot on the 90-man roster while Doyle remains on the PUP list.
Doyle, who has one year remaining on his rookie contract, was released, freeing up around $1 million in cap space. If he’s fit to play this season, the Bills have the financial room for his contract, especially with the additional $10.2 million cleared from Tre’Davious White’s post-June 1 release.
Despite appearing in 11 games during his rookie season and showing promise with a 46.2 overall grade from Pro Football Focus, Doyle’s career has been marred by injuries. His notable moment came during a Wild Card win over the New England Patriots, where he caught a touchdown pass from quarterback Josh Allen.
However, injuries have plagued Doyle, including an ACL injury in Week 3 of the 2022 season against the Miami Dolphins, which sidelined him for the entire year. His attempt at a comeback in 2023 was thwarted by another knee injury during a preseason game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, ending his season before it began.
