Dylan Carlson, 27, appeared in three major league games for Chicago earlier this season before eventually being released on May 4. At Triple-A Iowa, Carlson struggled offensively, batting .175 with a .600 OPS across 10 games. Those numbers were disappointing for a player once viewed as one of baseball’s brightest young talents.
Despite the rough start to the season, Carlson’s track record and experience still make him an intriguing low-risk addition. Philadelphia is likely hoping that a fresh environment and regular playing time at Triple-A Lehigh Valley can help him rediscover the confidence and offensive consistency that once made him a highly regarded prospect.
Carlson originally entered professional baseball with significant expectations after being selected in the first round of the MLB Draft by the St. Louis Cardinals.
