The Houston Astros made an important roster move ahead of Saturday’s matchup against the Cincinnati Reds by claiming outfielder Rhylan Thomas off waivers from the Seattle Mariners.
Thomas, who is 26 years old, will not immediately join Houston’s major league roster. Instead, the Astros optioned him to Triple-A Sugar Land, where he will continue developing while providing organizational depth. The move comes as Houston continues to manage injuries and roster adjustments during the early part of the season.
To make room for Thomas on the 40-man roster, the Astros transferred pitcher Hunter Brown to the 60-day injured list. Brown has been sidelined with a shoulder strain, though reports suggest he has recently resumed bullpen sessions and could still return later in the season if his recovery continues positively.
Thomas has had an interesting baseball journey over the past few years. He was originally selected by the New York Mets in the 11th round of the 2022 MLB Draft. Known for his athleticism, defensive versatility, and speed, he steadily worked his way through the minor leagues before eventually joining the Mariners organization through a trade.
Although his time in Seattle was brief, Thomas did get an opportunity to make his Major League Baseball debut. During his limited appearances, he managed to contribute offensively, recording hits and RBIs while showing flashes of potential. However, Seattle faced roster pressure and ultimately placed him on waivers, allowing Houston to claim him.
This season at the Triple-A level, Thomas has delivered respectable production both offensively and defensively. He has shown the ability to get on base, steal bases, and cover multiple outfield positions. Those qualities likely appealed to the Astros, who value flexible players capable of contributing in several roles over the course of a long MLB season.
Houston has built a reputation over the years for identifying overlooked talent and helping players maximize their potential. The organization may believe Thomas still has untapped upside that could eventually help the big-league club later in the year.
The roster move also came as the Astros entered Saturday’s contest against Cincinnati with strong momentum. Houston dominated the Reds 10–0 on Friday night, combining powerful offense with outstanding pitching. The convincing victory gave the Astros confidence as they continued their road series in Ohio.
For now, Thomas will focus on proving himself at Triple-A Sugar Land while waiting for another opportunity in the majors. If injuries continue or Houston needs additional outfield depth later this season, the newly acquired outfielder could eventually find himself wearing an Astros uniform at the MLB level.
