The Philadelphia Phillies are entering the postseason with hopes of capturing their first World Series championship since 2008 — something they’ve fallen short of in their past three playoff appearances. After winning the division last season but falling in the NLDS, there’s a renewed sense of optimism around this year’s team, more so than in recent years.
Still, regardless of how this October turns out, the offseason will arrive, and team president Dave Dombrowski will be tasked with building a roster capable of either defending a title or making another serious run at one.

One consistent area of concern for the Phillies has been their outfield, which has underperformed offensively and has arguably played a part in their playoff shortcomings. There’s hope that the recent addition of Harrison Bader — who’s been on a tear since the trade deadline — could help change that narrative. But if the Phillies are looking to make a major splash in free agency, one name stands out.
Zach Pressnell of Fastball on SI recently suggested that the Phillies would be an ideal fit for New York Yankees star Cody Bellinger, should he choose to opt out of his contract this offseason. “If Bellinger hits the open market, he’d be a great fit in Philadelphia’s outfield,” Pressnell wrote. “His addition could address the team’s biggest weakness in a significant way — potentially setting the Phillies apart from other top National League contenders.”
Bellinger has a $25 million player option for 2026, but given his strong performance this season, it’s widely expected he’ll test free agency for a longer-term deal. Philadelphia could be among the teams interested.
The 2019 NL MVP, Bellinger was traded from the Cubs to the Yankees in what was largely viewed as a salary dump. Since then, he’s enjoyed a bounce-back year, slashing .269/.328/.483 with 29 home runs, 97 RBIs, and a 4.8 bWAR over 147 games — his best season in several years. While he hasn’t quite replicated his 2019 dominance, Bellinger, now 30, is in line for a significant long-term contract.
The Phillies have reportedly considered retaining Bader, but pairing him with someone like Bellinger could transform an outfield unit that’s held the team back. If Bellinger opts out and the financials work, Philadelphia may have a prime opportunity to upgrade a key area of need.
