The Texas Rangers have officially reinstated pitcher Tyler Mahle from the 60‑day injured list. To make space on the 40‑man roster for his return, they designated Carl Edwards Jr. for assignment.
Edwards Jr. has had a rough go recently; this season he’s logged just six MLB innings, giving up three earned runs, and has struggled somewhat in Triple‑A with a 5.31 ERA across 39 innings at Round Rock.
Mahle’s road to this moment has been delayed by shoulder issues. After being placed on the 15‑day injured list in mid‑June due to right shoulder fatigue, additional diagnostics revealed a rotator cuff strain, which led to his transfer to the 60‑day IL. Prior to the injury, he had been pitching well: 14 starts, a 6‑3 record, and a 2.34 ERA in about 77 innings.

While Mahle is activated, it’s important to note that his recovery will still have to be managed carefully. Reports say he’s recently begun throwing again, but is still a few weeks away from being fully stretched out to start again.
As for Edwards Jr., being designated for assignment means the Rangers have 7 days (or so) to trade him, release him, or place him on irrevocable outright waivers. It’s unclear what moves he or the team will make next.
