The Memphis Grizzlies have reportedly agreed to a buyout with Cole Anthony..
About a month ago, the Memphis Grizzlies made a surprising move by trading Desmond Bane to the Orlando Magic in exchange for Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Cole Anthony, and several draft picks. They later used some of those picks to trade up and select Cedric Coward in the 2025 NBA Draft.
The Grizzlies intend to retain Caldwell-Pope, valuing his championship experience as they pursue a title. However, it didn’t take long for reports to surface that Memphis was already looking to part ways with Cole Anthony.
The Grizzlies likely explored trade options for Cole Anthony, but with his $13 million salary for the upcoming season and underwhelming performance last year, teams weren’t eager to take on his contract.
As a result, according to ESPN’s NBA insider Shams Charania, Memphis has agreed to a buyout with Anthony. Once he clears waivers, he’s expected to sign with the Milwaukee Bucks.
Last season, Cole Anthony averaged 9.4 points per game while taking on a larger role than expected due to numerous injuries on the Magic. It was one of his most efficient seasons in the NBA, but the former UNC standout hasn’t developed into the kind of playmaker teams typically look for in a lead guard.
In Memphis, a crowded backcourt—bolstered by the addition of Ty Jerome and the emergence of Scotty Pippen Jr.—meant limited playing time for Anthony if he had remained with the team.
Now with the Bucks, Anthony should have more opportunities. Milwaukee is thin at the guard position, having re-signed Ryan Rollins after parting ways with Damian Lillard. Anthony’s ability to create his own shot could be a valuable asset for their rotation.
