The Chicago Cubs are reportedly eyeing Jack Flaherty, a pitcher who previously signed a $116 million contract, as a potential acquisition. Flaherty, once a promising talent for the St. Louis Cardinals, faced challenges due to injuries affecting his shoulder, oblique, and hip from 2021 to 2023. However, he rebounded in 2024, posting a 3.17 ERA and 3.1 bWAR over 162 innings with the Detroit Tigers and Los Angeles Dodgers.
At 29, Flaherty is now a free agent and is expected to command a five-year, $115 million contract. The Cubs are considering him, but concerns about his long-term health, including shoulder and back issues, persist. Despite these risks, Flaherty’s recent performance suggests he could be a valuable addition if he remains healthy.
In addition to Flaherty, the Cubs have shown interest in other pitchers. Former Cy Young winner Sandy Alcantara, who underwent Tommy John surgery and missed the 2024 season, has struggled in 2025 with a 2-4 record and an 8.42 ERA across seven starts. Despite these challenges, the Cubs are evaluating whether acquiring Alcantara is worth the risk.
The Cubs’ pitching staff has faced challenges, including the season-ending injury to reliever Adbert Alzolay. Alzolay, who had a 4.67 ERA in 17.1 innings before his injury, underwent surgery and was placed on the 60-day injured list.
Looking ahead, the Cubs are scheduled to play the Philadelphia Phillies today, June 11, 2025, at 10:05 AM PDT.
