The Pittsburgh Steelers and T.J. Watt may not be close on a new deal.
Their front seven—consisting of linebackers and defensive linemen—is among the most talented and deepest in the league.
At the heart of that group is T.J. Watt, who has been a dominant presence since being drafted in 2017. With his current contract nearing its end, discussions have begun about a potential extension. Although a new deal this offseason seems unlikely due to other pressing priorities, the Steelers will eventually need to address his contract situation.

Steelers.com writer Bob Labriola advised fans to remain patient. He noted that while an immediate extension is unlikely, he fully expects negotiations to progress later in the year.
“Patience,” Labriola emphasized. “Extending a superstar like T.J. Watt isn’t simple—it takes time. These deals typically happen during the summer, and it’s still only May.”
Some have speculated about the possibility of the Steelers not re-signing Watt at all, and instead trading him for a major return—especially if the team’s offensive struggles prevent them from contending this year. Moving Watt could help them rebuild their offense with a significant package in return.
The Steelers now find themselves at a pivotal moment. With several key players approaching major decisions, the franchise is facing a defining offseason—one that could reshape its identity for the first time in decades.
