Breaking: Packers finally sign QB Taylor Elgersma more than a week after rookie minicamp tryout

The Green Bay Packers appear to have followed a clear plan coming out of rookie minicamp. After releasing wide receiver Tulu Griffen last Monday to make room on their 91-man roster, signs pointed to quarterback Taylor Elgersma filling that spot—especially based on hints from the coaching staff.

A Canadian sports broadcaster reported last Wednesday that Elgersma would sign with Green Bay, and while the move took over a week to finalize, his agent has now confirmed the signing to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.

Elgersma had been slated to attend the Buffalo Bills’ rookie minicamp over the weekend but opted to remain in Green Bay instead. Now officially part of the team, he becomes the fourth quarterback on the Packers’ depth chart, joining Jordan Love, Malik Willis, and Sean Clifford. He’ll take part in the team’s upcoming offseason program, including OTA sessions following Memorial Day and minicamp during the week of June 9.

Taylor Elgersma, a big-bodied, strong-armed quarterback, stood out as the most notable tryout player during the Packers’ rookie minicamp on May 3–4 and had clearly been on the team’s radar throughout the spring. After winning the 2024 Hec Crighton Trophy as the top player in Canadian college football, Elgersma made an official pre-draft visit to Green Bay. Though he went undrafted in the 2025 NFL Draft, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers selected him 18th overall in the second round of the CFL Draft.

Now officially signed with the Packers, Elgersma is expected to compete with Sean Clifford for the No. 3 quarterback role behind Jordan Love and Malik Willis. Clifford served as Love’s backup in 2023, but Green Bay waived him just before last year’s final cuts—shortly after acquiring Willis from the Titans—and brought him back as a practice squad quarterback.

Elgersma’s arrival sets up a potentially intriguing battle for that final quarterback spot heading into training camp.
