Chase Burns Injury Update: Reds Pitcher Still Waiting on Rehab Assignment

Cincinnati Reds rookie pitcher Chase Burns remains sidelined with a right flexor tendon strain, which has kept him out since mid-August.

As of Friday, Burns was seen throwing long toss, but according to MLB.com’s Mark Sheldon, there are still no concrete plans for a rehab stint.

The 22-year-old has struggled in his first MLB season, posting an 0-3 record with a 5.24 ERA and 57 strikeouts over 34 1/3 innings in eight appearances. Burns has reportedly been on a pitch limit this year, so it remains unclear whether the Reds will ease him back into action via the bullpen or return him to the starting rotation once he’s cleared.

The Reds are currently 67-62 and sit just 1.5 games behind the Mets for the final National League Wild Card spot. Left-hander Andrew Abbott is scheduled to start Sunday’s matchup against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
