The Edmonton Oilers have made significant changes to their coaching staff, announcing the additions of Paul McFarland as an assistant coach, Peter Aubry as the new goaltending coach, and Conor Allen as the team’s skills coach. These new hires aim to bring fresh perspectives and expertise to the team.
Paul McFarland, 39, returns to the NHL after serving as the head coach of the Calgary Hitmen in the WHL. He previously worked as an assistant coach for the Seattle Kraken and has experience in various coaching roles, including stints with the Florida Panthers and Toronto Maple Leafs. McFarland’s extensive background in hockey coaching will likely be a valuable asset to the Oilers.
Peter Aubry, 48, joins the Oilers after spending two years as an associate coach with Nebraska-Omaha. He also returns to the NHL, having previously worked as a developmental goaltending coach for the Chicago Blackhawks and their AHL affiliate. Aubry’s expertise in goaltending will be crucial in helping the Oilers’ goalies improve their performance.
Conor Allen, 35, begins his first NHL season as the Oilers’ skills coach. He brings a unique perspective, having played professionally and transitioned to coaching after retirement. Allen’s experience working with USA Hockey’s national under-17 team and the Sioux City Musketeers will likely benefit the Oilers’ players.
In addition to these new hires, the Oilers have signed contract extensions for assistant coach Mark Stuart and video coach Noah Segall, ensuring continuity and stability within the coaching staff. Paul Coffey will continue in his role as a special advisor to ownership and hockey operations.
The Oilers’ coaching staff changes come after a period of evaluation, and the team seems committed to building a strong and experienced coaching team to support their players and drive success. With these new additions, the Oilers are poised to make a strong push in the upcoming season.
