The Atlanta Braves are enduring a disastrous season. Instead of battling for the top spot in the National League, they appear to be out of playoff contention by the All-Star break.
Given the team’s poor performance, the front office might consider becoming sellers before the trade deadline—a surprising shift from preseason expectations, but one that now feels warranted.
FanSided’s Nick Villano recently forecasted that the Braves may part ways with designated hitter and former MVP contender Marcell Ozuna in the near future.
“While it would be more exciting if players like Acuña or Matt Olson were on the market, it’s far more likely the Braves opt to retool and aim for a stronger return next season,” Villano wrote. “Marcell Ozuna doesn’t carry that same long-term weight. He’s performed well for Atlanta, but with free agency looming after this season, his role limited to designated hitter, and being 34 years old, he’s better suited as a short-term offensive asset.”
“The Seattle Mariners make too much sense here. They finally mixed their elite pitching with decent hitting, and adding Ozuna would give them a potent lineup for the playoffs.”
“The Seattle Mariners seem like a perfect fit. They’ve finally combined their top-tier pitching with solid offense, and bringing in Ozuna would further strengthen their lineup for a postseason run.”
Dealing Ozuna is a logical move for the Braves, as his contract is set to expire after this season.
It’s unlikely that Atlanta will re-sign Ozuna in the offseason. With his age and the expectation of a hefty new contract, the Braves probably won’t be eager to spend big on an aging designated hitter.
If Atlanta decides to move him, they could potentially acquire a few quality prospects in return.
Given the Braves’ current situation, it makes far more sense to trade Ozuna for prospects now rather than hold onto him and try to re-sign him in the offseason.
