Breaking: Astro Set to Land Another Trade Spot for $45million Ace

Despite losing Ryan Pressly, Kyle Tucker, and Alex Bregman during the offseason, the Houston Astros have managed to stay atop the American League standings. As the trade deadline approaches, however, it’s clear they’ll need to bolster their starting rotation to remain competitive through the stretch run. Fortunately for Houston, there are several potential pitching targets available as they look to solidify their postseason push.

Bleacher Report’s Tim Kelly recently floated the idea that the Houston Astros could make a major move for Kansas City Royals ace Seth Lugo in the coming weeks. “With Framber Valdez headed for free agency after this season, the Astros would be wise to pursue a controllable starter who’s guaranteed to stick around through 2026,” Kelly wrote. “But even though Lugo is expected to opt out of the final year of his three-year, $45 million contract, the AL Cy Young runner-up from last season is simply too strong of a fit for Houston to ignore.”

Given their limited payroll, the small-market Royals likely can’t afford to risk losing Seth Lugo for nothing in the offseason—especially if he declines a qualifying offer. Lugo is widely viewed as a rental at this point, with most expecting him to opt out of his contract after this season rather than pick up the 2026 option. The right-hander was a serious AL Cy Young contender last year, finishing just behind Tarik Skubal, whose dominant campaign edged him out for the award.

Seth Lugo has quietly continued his strong form this season, ranking among the league’s top pitchers once again. With his consistent performance, the Astros might consider parting with a few top prospects to acquire him before the deadline—especially if they view him as a long-term fit and plan to negotiate a contract extension in the offseason.
