Cardinals Have Real Offer Threat As Nolan Arenado’s trade value hits a depressing new low for Cardinals

Nolan Arenado will be under contract for two more seasons after this one reaches its conclusion.

Perhaps Nolan Arenado gained an advantage from playing half of his games each year in Denver’s high altitude. While he remained an All-Star during his early seasons with the St. Louis Cardinals, the future Hall of Fame third baseman is now stuck with an unfavorable contract. Currently, he’s batting a career-low .248 for a Cardinals team that’s performing around average.

In Jim Bowden’s MLB trade deadline mailbag for The Athletic, a potential trade sending Arenado to the Los Angeles Dodgers was discussed. Since Arenado grew up in Orange County, the move could be interesting. However, Bowden opposed the idea of the Dodgers giving up pitcher Bobby Miller and outfielder James Outman in exchange, noting that the Dodgers are unwilling to take on Arenado’s contract.

Arenado recently turned 34 and remains under contract with St. Louis through the 2027 season. By the time he becomes a free agent, he’ll be 36 or 37. Once a consistent All-Star, Silver Slugger, Gold Glove winner, and MVP contender at third base, he no longer performs at that elite level. Bowden points out that the Dodgers are content with Max Muncy as a key player in their infield.

Arenado’s situation illustrates how quickly a player can go from superstar status to being overlooked.
